Street Ministry
At The King’s Embrace we believe LOVE is an action verb. Our staff actively works to meet the young boys currently living on the streets of Bungoma. Our street ministry involves buying loaves of bread and sodas then searching out the corners of town where the young boys congregate. Giving them this small amount of nourishment allows our staff to engage with these vulnerable boys. Listening to their stories and learning about the circumstances that led to life on the streets is the initial step to showing these boys that they are loved. Building a connection and establishing trust allows our staff to begin meeting the child’s needs even while the child is still on the streets.
We also operate a Drop-In Center in the heart of downtown Bungoma. It is an acute care center for boys currently living on the streets. Sick or injured boys can receive the medical attention they need, including hospital care. Medically fragile boys are allowed to have a short stay at the Drop-In Center for safety while they recover.
Our social worker counsels the boys, both on the street and at the Drop-In Center. He works to help them leave the dangerous environment of the street and be reunited with their family of origin. However, sometimes neglect or abuse suffered at the hand of an immediate family member is the very thing that drove the child to the street. In these cases, our staff searches to find extended family members such as grandparents, aunts, or uncles who might agree to take care of the child. If there is no family member solution and the child demonstrates an earnest desire to return to school, he may be considered for The King’s Embrace intake process.
